The Lotus Terraces residential development in Bang Por has attracted a team of professionals, outstanding in their experience and credentials, to work on its idyllic beach front properties.

In this issue, we profile Denis Astgen, head of Cambodia based M & E company, Comin Asia. The Samui branch, Comin Thai, is the M & E team overseeing The Lotus Terraces.

Denis, what drew you towards the M & E business in South East Asia?

Some friends introduced me to Cambodia when I was twenty-four years old. I thought it would be an exciting place to live, so I decided to leave my native France, and to enter the Cambodian M & E business as a project manager on a one year basis. That was in 1995.

You decided to stay.

Yes, I had the opportunity to open a division of the company. It started with five people. Now there are three hundred and fifty, including a large number of expatriates from Europe.

What brought you to Samui?

Our work involves a lot of travel – designs, installations, purchasing – I move in and around Asia. In 2004, a contact started activity on Samui and was looking for a good quality M & E company. We were invited to bid, and we secured work on the Karma project in the north of the island, a contract which lasted two years.

Why did you open a fully staffed office here – Comin Thai?

We realized that Samui was in need of a high-end M & E company, with an international scope. We started operations in 2006. Comin Thai is a chance to provide solutions rather than excuses to projects on Samui. We use our contacts and our reach to provide the best resources from overseas, whether those resources are equipment, materials or man-power.

You made a bid for The Lotus Terraces in September, 2006.

That’s right. We met the project developer, Michael Nagel in KL. He instilled a confidence in the project and we were entirely charmed by the founding ideas. These ideas are supported by strong implementation – strong architecture, strong landscape design – the detail in the architecture is exceptional! As a contractor we felt very secure.

What’s your personal of vision for The Lotus Terraces as a completed development?

I think The Lotus Terraces will be a development that inspires a certain spirit of life and lifestyle. It promotes a feeling of well-being, and with the founders living on site much of the year, I think it will create an international community sharing an experience of happiness and good feeling.

We have already felt this ourselves, working as part of an international team: Malaysian, Thai, Cambodian, enjoying each other’s company and sharing a sense of responsibility to the project.

And with the Comin Thai office only 300 metres away, it’s also safe to say that The Lotus Terraces will be very well maintained!
