Natalie SchneiderThe Lotus Terraces residential development in Bang Por has attracted a team of professionals, outstanding in their experience and credentials, to work on its idyllic beach front properties. In this issue, we speak to Australian-born Natalie Schneider, of Bangkok company, P.L. Design. Natalie worked as landscape designer on The Lotus Terraces. Tell us about P.L. Design and how you got involved in a company so far from home. PL Design was founded in early 1991 and has earned the international reputation for innovative design service in site planning and landscape architecture. The company has provided planning services for resorts such as the Peninsula in Bangkok, condominiums, housing, offices, public areas and golf courses. I’m the project landscape architect for the Lotus Terraces and have been working at P.L. Design for 11 years since first coming to Thailand for ‘one year’ and never quite managing to leave. I love the climate, the tropical plants - of which there aren’t many in Melbourne, where I’m from - and especially the food and not having to cook! What attracted you to The Lotus Terraces project? What attracted us to this project was the great site with direct beach Also, it is being developed by a great team with a lot of experience in project operation and client’s needs, so we were convinced that the end product would be well worthwhile being a part of. How is the design philosophy of P.L. Design reflected in The Lotus Terraces? One of the major aspects of our design philosophy is to create a design that is responsive to the context and site conditions of the project. In this case one of the main aims was to maximize the ocean views. A central axis walkway was designed to channel the views to the ocean. The axis begins with an infinity swimming pool in front of the townhouses which cascades down to lily ponds surrounding the main walkway, eventually leading to the curved swimming pool which is like a reflection of the horizon. A large deck embraces the beach and has lots of space for sun lounges, lawn areas, a kid’s pool and shaded pavilions. At the same time we utilized lush planting to give a sense of privacy for each villa without boxing up the site with high boundary walls. Samui is quite a dry island so we selected plants that don’t need a lot of water and can tolerate the ocean conditions like Pong Pong and Coral Trees. We have also used lots of tropical flowers such as Heliconia, Hibiscus, Water Liles and Lotus and scented plants near entrances and the terraces like Frangipani and Gardenia. Originally part of the site was a Coconut and Cashew plantation so we also tried to keep as many of these existing trees as possible. What are your impressions of Koh Samui? Samui is less built up than Phuket and for me has more of a holiday feel. When I think of Samui, I think of bright and sunny –clear blue skies, aqua ocean, white sand and coconut plantations. This is one of the reasons we wanted to keep as many of the existing coconuts in this site as possible as for me they really identify with the character of the island.
